On January 12th, 2009, the 3rd Climate Change, Millennium Development Goals and World Tourism event was held in Seoul. The forum was hosted and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Tourism Organization, the Korean Culture and Tourism Institute, and ST-EP Foundation (also the event organizer).
On the eve of the forum a Welcoming Reception was held under the theme “Viva, Mumbai!”, dedicated to the resilience shown after the terrible terrorist attacks in November 2008; moving remarks were delivered by India’s Ambassador to Korea. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha Rose Migiro delivered keynote addresses at the first and second events respectfully.
This event marked the third gathering, with over 160 attendees (including 10
Ambassadors to the Republic of Korea) that listened to the speakers, who
included (left to right) Ambassador Dho Young-shim, Oh Jee-chul, CEO &
President of the Korea Tourism Organization, Francesco Frangialli,
Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Rahim Mashaee, Vice-President of Islamic
Republic of Iran, Mamata Bako B. Djaouga, Minister of Tourism of Benin, Elimane
Hamidine Sy, Tourism Representative from Senegal, Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor
to the Secretary-General on the Millennium Development Goals and Yu In-chon,
Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Discussions and presentations focused
on the interconnectedness of climate change, the MDGs and world tourism, as well
as the present financial crisis. A lively Q&A session followed the
event.
